“Car” – Master The Usage Of This Conjunction

French Word of the Day “car” because, for, as

Word origin

The Modern French conjunction car comes from quārē (for what reason) in Latin.

Example sentences

This first example sentence uses sortir, which means ‘to go out’. Students often confuse this verb with partir (to leave).

Je sors car il fait beau.

I’m going out because it’s nice weather out.

For this second example sentence, the expression faire attention à + noun can translate to ‘watch out for’ or ‘be careful of’.

Attention aux piétons, car ils marchent dans la rue.

Watch out for the pedestrians as they’re walking in the street.

This sentence uses a similar expression, faire gaffe à + noun, which is somewhat synonymous with faire attention.

Fais gaffe à ce mec car il est très malin.

Watch out for that guy because he’s very clever.

Interestingly, the masculine noun le car means bus or coach.

Mes amis sont allés en Espagne en car.

My friends went to Spain by bus.
